The Futurists, a group of Italian artists who collaborated in the early 1900s, wrote numerous manifestos expounding their vision of a future world in which machines and speed fueled mankind's expression. While some of their beliefs may contradict the common views of the contemporary artist (they believed in war and the destruction of the past, including museums), they were progressive in their ability to foresee an increasingly technology-based society. They were also ahead of their time in their efforts to photograph themselves as a group, wearing a uniform style, and create art in a recognizable fashion across various mediums. This was an early form of branding, and its successful execution is one reason we still remember them today.

One of her recent achievements, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, exemplifies her meticulous attention to historical accuracy while redefining the look and attitude of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters. Beavan credits Jude Law's and Robert Downey's performances for making the wardrobe seem modern, but her bohemian styling of Downey and military styling of Law were bold departures from anything Sherlock fans had seen before.

Fascinated with traditional suspenders this season, I recently added buttons inside the waistband of some H&M trousers. Further research on the subject revealed that suspenders were originally worn on buttons attached to the outside of the waistband. Uncommon Creatures is the debut fashion collection from Copenhagen-based duo Christina Højris Ottosen and Jens Kold-Christensen. Inspired by the clothes of Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn, the collection raises questions of artists' ethics. In referencing images from a religious tradition, the intention and commentary beg to be examined. In this case it seems clear that the intent was purely stylistic, executed with creativity and intelligence.

When I was interviewed for Riviera Magazine this past June, I had no idea I would find a lasting fashion friend in my interviewer. Recently I met up again with Chantal Gordon, now the San Diego Shopping Editor for NBC's new culture website TheFeast.com, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some insight from a fashion alumni.

Suck My Savvy: Since relocating to San Diego from the East Coast, what differences in menswear are most notable to you between the coasts? Is there an overall difference in how men view fashion/style that has to do with something other than the weather?

Chantal: Most notably to me, of course, is the difference in casualness -- the boxy sunglasses, the shorts, the flip-flops in nice restaurants. Between living here and in LA, I've probably seen more men's feet in the past 6 years than I did in all my 20 years living on the East Coast... Which is sort of icky to acknowledge out loud.

That said, surf culture is a totally legit fashion culture of its own. And I very much dig that. SD brands like Nixon, DC Shoes, and Reef all do really exciting, progressive takes on performance wear and athletic wear. It's what the fashion world likes to call "sportif," but in this case, it's not a bandwagon thing -- it's totally legit and authentic. In other words, when you see East Coast designers doing surf-inspired Neoprene pieces -- or Vogue doing a shoot with Rob Machado and Blake Lively in Cardiff -- that really speaks to SD's relevance in the style conversation.

As for influences other than the weather... hmmm. I'd say SD's style is pretty inextricably tied to its climate. But -- there is this lack of pretense that I think stems from the whole cultural rivalry between SD and LA.

Also -- excitingly -- I've been seeing so many stylish guys popping up here lately. (I think they've been reading SuckMySavvy!) At Craft and Commerce, at El Dorado, at gallery and museum events. I think sometimes when a guy is really bringing his A-game and really taking a risk with what he wears, part of it could be a reaction against that "board shorts and flip-flops" stereotype that bedevils SD. To show that we're so much more than that. Which I love.

I think stylish guys get to stand out more in S.D., differentiate themselves. Because in NY, you go to a cool bar, and 90 percent of the men look amazing -- and sort of similar, style-wise. So for guys here, the notion of being "the best dressed man in the room" is totally within reach, and can totally be used to one's advantage.

Suck My Savvy: What items, icons, or concepts do you see being incorporated currently with the Fall/Winter season in menswear? Any specific fits, colors, textures, and looks that you see as guiding this season?

Chantal: Steve McQueen! Yves Saint Laurent the man! I'm all about the turtleneck as seen on Steve McQueen and YSL, and think every guy would do well to go out and get him a properly fitting one.

As for trends - I know it seems like every season editors are touting "military," but this F/W, it's a very specific kind of military look, that of British Special Forces, as seen in forest green knits, heavy-duty boots and Army-Navy jackets.

Suck My Savvy: What do you predict for next F/W season, or preferably what would you like to see menswear headed next F/W?

Chantal: I'm a sucker for the skinny '60s suits that have dominated over the past few years, but I'm predicting -- and sort of hoping, in spite of myself -- that double-breasted '40s suits (with the sharp, almost sinister lapels) will continue to gain more of a mainstream appeal. The only problem is that they can either look fantastic or hideous, and never something in-between. So it's a tricky look to pull off.

Suck My Savvy: In San Diego, our F/W season seems to last only one or two months. What tips/suggestions do you have for keeping cold weather garments incorporated in one's wardrobe all year long? Or rather, what Fall items do you believe are acceptable for wear well into Spring/Summer?

Chantal: Chukka boots like these (link) will last you all year long. Get one pair in neutral, and another in a more adventurous shade (or a sneaker-hybrid version) and you can wear them with your skinny wool pants during winter, and a fresh pair of seersucker shorts come the Fourth of July.

These tartan jeans remain old standbys because they go with almost anything. As my friend Def Sound says (who owns a similar pair), "When I wear these, I always come up with a win." The photographer suggested I add a bulky scarf on top because it balances the slim fit of the garments.

I hesitate to write the word "icon" when referring to musician Theophilus London. He is only 22 years old, yet his influence as a trendsetter seems to grow exponentially. With a new record deal from Warner Bros. and recent features in GQ and Esquire, it seems Theophilus is trading in his days of free online mixtapes for a piece of the main stage.

In the GQ spotlight he cites David Byrne and Morrissey as personal style inspirations. He amusingly blurts, "I'm inspired by old dudes. I stole the idea of snap-back baseball caps from laid-back old dudes in Brooklyn who wear caps and huge aviators to block the sun."

1980s nostalgia overran everything last year: music, graphics, fashion and even politics. The '80s' influence carried over into 2010, but for me that ship sailed, slowed to an eerie pace and capsized mid-trip. As a result I've been overhauling my graphic design work as well as my wardrobe, favoring classic concepts over fluorescent trends.

That is not to say I'm hastily disregarding anything with the mark of the '80s. My acid wash denim jacket (pictured below) just plain fits well, so it gets a pass. This weekend I had fun wearing it as part of an urban-Western nerd look. *Photos by Sarah Conrique

Publicity stunt or not, the Go Forth campaign from Levi Strauss & Co. brilliantly captures the zeitgeist of an America that faces hard economic times and still lives in the long shadow of Hurricane Katrina. The surprisingly poignant ad below is part of a larger project in which Levi's invested in the community center, public library, and urban farm of Braddock, Pennsylvania. If only political campaigns were this well crafted.

Military Inspiration

Military clothing served as inspiration for civilian fashion throughout the last century — from aviator glasses and pea coats to navy sweaters and frock coats. For some people it is worn as a direct homage to the armed forces, for others (like John Lennon and The Clash) it is an ironic anti-establishment statement, and for others it is simply a preference for military tailoring and fabric. I fell into the latter category when I took a liking to this army green coat. Leather suspenders with tabs, not clips, took months to find. It took longer still to customize trousers so that the suspenders could be attached. Bit by bit the look came together, and last weekend I had great fun stomping around Golden Hill with Sarah Conrique snapping photos on a Canon Rebel. After seeing photos of Sean Penn dressed as an aging rock star for his new film This Must Be the Place, a friend and I had a discussion regarding rockers past their prime. Why are some rock stars considered classics and others, well, washed up? If a rocker is wearing the same style he did in 1985, is he staying true to himself, or merely showing an unhealthy stubbornness to evolve? Our discussion did not lead to any satisfying conclusion, but we did determine that our favorite rocker over 50 is Morrissey, whose style and music prove timeless.

This is the sort of shoe that you can dress up or dress down, and one of the reasons is the height of the heel. A blazer with peaked lapels (the kind that point upward) can be a challenge to find, particularly if you prefer your peaks wide. Narrow, notched lapels have been the mass retailer standard for as long as I can remember. That's why I appreciate photos from bygone eras when peaked, double breasted, three piece suits were readily available—photos like the one of my grandparents (below, courtesy of my uncle Hiroshi Shimizu). Also pictured is actor John Cho from a recent issue of GQ. Hopefully that is a sign that these jackets are making a comeback.

As the fog rolls in and erases all memory of Summer, I walk to the local Salvation Army to collect some new vintage blazers. One grey jacket with a unique fabric fits my shoulders to a "T", but, as you can see in the photos, it has an oversized 1980s silhouette. To make the look more modern, I roll up the sleeves and add fitted slacks. Not to avoid all '80s references, however, I wear a t-shirt featuring the art of Jean Michel Basquiat. The most obvious reason to visit the blog Seeking Dirty Hair Halo is to admire photos of its author, Shannon. The Minneapolis native has a style all her own—daring with a sense of humor. The reason to continue following her blog, though, is her candidly quirky commentary. Assuming a person with so much verbal and visual wit would have a head full of interesting thoughts on style, I asked her some questions and she did not disappoint (Q&A below).

SuckMySavvy: Do you have any favorite trends in menswear right now?
Shannon: I'm a big fan of what I consider European style à la The Sartorialist. I love fitted suits, fedoras, cuffed trousers, witty shoes, an unexpected shirt beneath beneath an unexpected blazer, and down right sass. I like to hear a man's snap without him having to touch his fingers together. You do this well, Graham.

SMS: Thanks, Shannon. What are some styles you'd like to see men wear more often?
S: I dig on tie alternatives such as ascots, bows, pocket squares, scarves, bolos, etc. It's refreshing and bold. Part of me is almost sick of the standard tie, but I only say that because it's been massively over worn in such a cookie cutter way. I wouldn't scoff at a beautifully patterned or colored tie that's been elegantly coordinated with a snazzy shirt and blazer. I'm just craving more thought behind the standard menswear uniform.

SMS: How would you say your hometown influences your style?
S: I grew up in Marin County, just outside of San Francisco, and came to Minneapolis when I was 18. I've been here for almost 10 years and at this point consider both locales my home.

The Marin girl in me is a completely drippy hippy. If I had a time machine I'd travel straight to 60's Haight-Ashbury, kill a couple brain cells and drape myself in fringe, mixed metals, brocade, feathers, thick patterned knits and suede. I admire the complete disregard of boundaries and control back then.

The Minneapolian in me? That's hard to say. Here is where I became engrossed in the ever so thrilling and evolving fashion blogging universe, so I can't pinpoint a Minneapolis point of view I've adopted. However, I can absolutely thank all of the women who've sold their beautiful clothing off to the local thrift stores here where I find so many of my coveted treasures.

SMS: Do you have any other tips or style ideas you'd like to share?
S: I recently had a "closet revelation" in which I seriously donated half of my clothing, shoes and accessories. As a blogger I've wanted to keep my style fresh and new, yet in the process I've acquired a whole lot of junk. For whatever reason I'd been taking quantity over quality. Big mistake.

I got rid of anything that didn't flatter my body or have an element of specialness to it, whether it was on trend or not. My goal is to only purchase items that pretty much give me a boner, and then have sex with those items for a while before I move on and buy something else. This isn't to say I'm buying more expensive clothing; I'm not. I'm still a die-hard thrifter and bargain-hunter. I'm just trying to shop in a more thoughtful and disciplined way. As a result, it seems to be easier getting dressed when I have less to choose from but I truly like all my options.

To all you thrifters out there: take a lesson from me and don't buy something okay because it's only $3, it'll just take up precious closet space... and confuse the s**t out of you when you're trying to get dressed in the morning.

Old Town, Knit Bow Tie

When you live close to a city landmark, you tend to take it for granted. Its very existence may slip your mind. That has been the case for me and the "Old Town" section of San Diego, the original city center and the first European settlement on the West Coast. Old Town is the most visited state park in California, but I have only been there once. Last week I re-discovered its lines of charming restaurants and shops, notably the renovated lobby of the The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant.

The bow tie I'm wearing above was designed and handmade by Vanessa Veronique Rockstroh of Roxtro Apparel. The beautiful and talented Vanessa is known to knit custom beanies for her international clientele, so a bow tie was a special request for which I'm infinitely grateful. I've worn the tie at least 5 times and I'm always impressed with its unique crafts[wo]manship. Images from the new UO look book indicate that oxfords, dockworkers' boots and desert boots are the footwear choices of trendy fellows this Fall/10. To my amusement, a friend looked over these photos and said, "It looks like they're making guys roll up their pants and tuck in their shirts this year." It's a sinister reality that there exists an omnipresent they comprised of fashion merchants who impose their will on young men (and women). Like I always say: The ad machine is working hard to seduce you, so don't live and die by their images. Find inspiration everywhere.

With female designer Eunice Lee at the helm, menswear brand UNIS has been catching fire in the fashion press. Her website describes the UNIS style as "urbane while easy, elegant without affect." I could not agree more. This grey peacoat is an ideal item for the upcoming Winter season. Then again, no one does a peacoat quite like Burberry.

If you're looking through photographer Nick Hunt's coverage of The Couture Council's Fashion Visionary Award Ceremony in New York, you may notice Karl Lagerfeld in an all-grey suit. To some Americans it is a fashion faux pas to wear white after September 6th, Labor Day. But fashion rules are meant to be broken. Clothes should express individuality above all else, especially when worn casually. Laura Fitzpatrick of Time Magazine might agree:

"Much to the chagrin of sartorial purists, that skepticism of the Labor Day law has seeped into mainstream America. From 1960s counterculture to the present day... more people than ever are breaking the rule. Even the 2004 manners bible, Emily Post's Etiquette, 17th Edition, gives the go-ahead for wearing white after Labor Day."

For me, the end of Summer is less about retiring white than it is about retiring linen, which does little in the way of keeping one warm. My Summer suit was both. In the photo below it was paired with an ascot for a business lunch. Until next year, addio.

Last year we saw the resurgence of the tie clip in menswear—the horizontal bar that keeps the necktie in place midway down the torso. This year we may see a new trend with the collar pin. Conceived in the early 20th century, collar pins and barbells (2nd image, courtesy of Esquire Magazine) keep the collar of a dress shirt pressed neatly in place, while lifting the necktie prominently upward.

In the film Youth In Revolt, a mousy young man invents a suave alter ego to court the girl of his dreams. The alter ego, Francois Dillinger (pictured below), is invariably clad in white slacks, blue button ups and aviator sunglasses. This idea of recreating one's personality—even for a short time—fascinated me immensely during the week after viewing the movie. I decided to grow a pencil mustache as a social experiment, and I was surprised how much this subtle line of facial hair affected people's perception of me. While it was an amusing gag, it proved ultimately unfitting for my lifestyle.

Before the Liberation of Paris in the mid-1940's, a hipster counterculture known as the Zazous rose out from Parisian youth angst. According to libcom.org, the Zazous were a "sharp response to the deadening effect on society of the Nazi-Vichy rule. They met in cinemas, in the cellar clubs and at parties arranged at short notice."

Along with a shared set of liberal social views and an affinity for jazz music, these young French people developed a fashion that was all their own. The 1944 photograph below is from Cally Blackman's recent publication 100 Years of Menswear, which states that "this Zazou typifies the style: massive shades, slicked-back hair 'oiled like a salad', pencil-thin moustache, white socks and thick-soled shoes."

After fifteen years I re-watched the Antonio Banderas gunslinging film Desperado. As I watched him leap through explosions with Salma Hayek in tow, I realized that this Mexican fantasy had been a major part of my inner mythos as a teenager.

I began to think about the images we collect in our minds which form our sense of "cool" and "uncool" — the images that we use, in part, to form our exterior identities. In pondering this, I decided to piece together an outfit resembling the Desperado character. For personal reasons I added the Frida Kahlo belt buckle and a flower (in honor of Frida).

In fact, it has become easier for me to sew buttons onto my old slacks than it has been to track down store bought, pre-buttoned slacks. With this issue specifically on my mind, I notice Paul wearing an authentically suspendered outfit while standing in the cheese section of Trader Joe's. He says that he enjoys true suspenders because "they are better suited to tall men than clip-ons." Standing at around 6'3", I can see why this is a concern for him. Paul also shares that the slacks were purchased at an East Coast Zara location.

In this photo from 1966, in a floral print dress, is my lovely mother Junko. Also pictured is her mother (middle) and younger sister (left). At one time my mother did fashion illustration and hair styling, and continues to help me with style ideas.

Last month I visited New People, a contemporary art center in Japantown, San Francisco. The building was once home to The Hokubei Mainichi, a newspaper co-founded by my grandfather Iwao Shimizu. Although the space is no longer occupied by the paper, the new management respectfully memorializes the building's history with a wall of photos—including one of my grandfather (below). Apparently bow ties were his trademark and he wore them every day to work.

Sometimes new ideas originate from complete accidents. Rushing out the door to a business lunch, I knotted my necktie much too long. More concerned with the clock than my appearance, I tucked the tie into my slacks and continued forward. As the day went on I noticed that the tucking kept the tie in place and out of the way—an alternative to the tie clip—and reinforced the newspaperman look I was after.

As Summer winds down I've been enjoying short sleeve dress shirts, cuffed slacks and classic high waters. To achieve the sock-less look and accommodate my feet at the same time, I've been using men's no-show liners by Calvin Klein. Burlington offers a similar product called "invisible socks".

At the end of the day I spent an hour exploring San Diego's Logan Heights neighborhood, where I found this charmingly retro barber shop and a Mexican restaurant serving up fresh corn tortillas and savory carnitas, La Fechada.

According to the publisher, "The impact of Pierre Cardin, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and other designers is contrasted with the street fashion of the 1960s, punk and the clubbing scene to bring together the story of the flourishing menswear scene in one invaluable book." Whether you're a man or a woman, I think this is a brilliantly quirky solution. She called it simply "my school boy look". On America's Independence Day I am introduced to San Diego's house party scene, an independent subculture in its own right. I'm not talking about the genre of music known as house, but a series of houses notorious for hosting raucous socials that feature live local bands, and with turnouts so large that cover charges apply. Wearing my red, white and blue bow tie, I venture into Golden Hill neighborhood's Tree House for the first time.

Walking up the driveway of a quiet suburban block, it's hard to imagine the noise you are about to step into. Immediately after handing the cover to a bearded man under a lamp, you are standing in a yard of grass with a gazebo, a bonfire, and dozens of twenty-somethings in a crossfire of conversation. Two sets of stairways lead up to a rickety wooden patio, where more people tilt back beer bottles on mismatched furniture. From the patio you enter the living room, where a local band is mid-set. Crashing drums and screeching guitars greet you there, along with a room jam packed with onlookers. The music is genuine and passionate, and so is its audience.

As the night progressed I meet innumerable musicians, music appreciators, party junkies and fellow bloggers (such as Patrick and Emily Dubois). I have a particularly good time chatting with members of the band Colony, who will be playing a live show tonight at the Che Cafe >>>

Station Tavern in San Diego's South Park neighborhood is the epicenter of a sizable t-shirt sidewalk sale Tuesday evening. At least a hundred design-minded locals pile into the space to inspect the merch, participate in a tee design contest, and scarf down burgers.

It is clear from the get-go that Daniel of Sezio will be a real character. While some people I photograph for this blog are skeptical of my camera, he enjoys the attention and encourages me to take multiple shots. Before I even get a chance to snap a picture, a female admirer steps in to confess her attraction to Daniel despite having a boyfriend elsewhere. Daniel is not surprised.

Jennifer (center) is a tad camera shy, but I insist that her cat tights be documented and shared with the public. Her friends Tera (left) and Eleni are not nearly as hesitant.

Wearing boots like these with shorts may seem unorthodox, but Stephen of architecture firm Public pulls it off well. When I ask him if his frames are prescription or faux, he insists that I try them on. I do, and they are not faux.

Finding a braided black leather belt is more challenging than I thought. After a two-week search, I discover one at City Digz in downtown San Diego. Just one problem: it is 12 sizes too big. Fortunately, shortening a braided belt is easy, as outlined in the steps below.

(1) Using small scissors, cut open the stitching on the end covering.
(2) Peel off the end covering.
(3) Cut the belt to a size appropriate to your waist.
(4) Adhere the end covering back on with the strongest glue you own.

Rick, a member of the band The Dancing Strangers, resides in Tijuana, Mexico, but travels up to San Diego frequently. We gabbed at length about the state of men's fashion.

Luckily 2010 brought with it the upstart vintage boutique Bedouin, which doubles as an art gallery. The store boasts high quality, well chosen merchandise at more-than-fair prices. The green weekend bag and black brogues (pictured) are recent acquisitions from Bedouin, while the striped ascot originated from Frock You Vintage in University Heights. My friend Bassam sold me the suspenders and bow tie at a bargain.

Some call San Francisco "Fog City", but during my time there I saw only sunny skies. I walked along the street shops of Haight-Ashbury, down through the newly revitalized Japantown, and even caught a glimpse of Noe Valley just as the sun set. In some cities it is commonplace for twenty-somethings to dress up and host cocktail parties. San Diego is not one of those cities. But last week—in the land of the laid back—one North Park house party did go the chichi route and enforce a dress code. Rather than plaid shirts and Chuck Taylors there were neckties and Oxfords. Rather than kegs there were martinis. And as indie band members and artists piled in wearing uncharacteristically formal duds, one attendee dubbed the affair a "late prom for outcasts". Fortunately, the multilingual staff is eager to guide you through the seemingly endless variations. They also dish out honest advice if the hat you pursue does not complement your face shape.

Recently having viewed Benny and Joon, I arrive dead set on acquiring a grey porkpie hat. It turns out the style is available here, only slightly too small. That's when helpful staffer Anna offers something I do not expect—to steam the hat and stretch it overnight. I consent to the experiment and find a perfect fit awaiting me the following afternoon.

Ashley dashes across an intersection in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood as I step out of Flashbacks clothing store. On her way to a hair salon, she wears an unexpected pairing of black knee-highs and beige boots. Our conversation is brief, but I get a sense that her juxtaposition of styles is indicative of her personality—an outwardly conservative girl with a punk rock soul. In a soft-spoken manner she describes her affinity for the writings of Henry Rollins, her own writings in poetry, and an enthusiasm for the anarchist punk band Crass (download below) that inspired her waistline tattoo.

So what does Ashley like on men? "Boldness," she says. "Too many men are conservative with their style and don't realize how attractive a little courage can be."

Gussying up for a warm night out can be challenging with a closet full of wool outerwear. That's why my new favorite item is the cotton blazer. It is more comfortable than wool, handily worn wrinkled and easily afforded (I found this one on sale for $19). Underneath I'm wearing a pale pink linen shirt, accessorized with a $3 secondhand women's scarf that I cut to pieces.

Spring time is a good time to don a straw hat, at least during daylight hours. After inspecting the offerings of local haberdasheries, I was impressed by the design of this hat by California's own Stüssy brand. The outdated fit of this secondhand Ralph Lauren shirt probably makes it too loose to be worn formally, but it makes a comfy weekend outfit when paired with relaxed-fit slacks. The idea to wear a green scarf came when I noticed that my shoe laces were green, plus it breaks up all the monochromatic blue.

The question frequently arises as to how a shoe should best be worn without socks. My favorite solution is the terry cloth insole, which enhances comfort and absorbs perspiration.

Women's fashion was the focus of The Butterfly Effect Fashion Show at San Diego's Balboa Park last week, but attendee Greg Cassius's bold patterns garnered the most attention in the lobby afterwards. Greg was equally cordial as he was dapper, seen here greeting hat designer Diana Cavagnaro.

Also cavorting at the event were TV star Jai Rodriguez, Triax Associates President Mary Beth Kellee, and model extraordinaire Akiko Mims (in a Jose Maria butterfly dress).

This being my first piped blazer, I am still looking for interesting ways to wear it. I took a bit of a chance combining it with casual boating attire, and I'm still deciding whether I like this look or not. Let's call it a first crack. As for the hair, I have no rational explanation. It apparently wants to form itself into a perfect sphere.

For fun I've been working on an outfit inspired by 1993's Benny and Joon. Until the wearable concoction is complete, I thought I would share the images that I'm using as creative fodder. In the same way that Johnny Depp reappropriated the style of comedian Buster Keaton (first image) and made it his own, I'm looking for aspects of Johnny's character wardrobe to update.

Sunday, sun up. With the daylight also came the rare opportunity to work with photographer Holly Port on a photo shoot for Angel's Piano Bar in Los Angeles. The photos are currently being edited, but Holly was kind enough to share a few preview images. For this retro-upscale setting, I opted for a beige linen suit from H&M over a black button up from Flashbacks. The siren in the mirror below is the incomparable Novena Carmel of Babystone. American Apparel is throwing a rummage sale in the basement of its San Diego Gaslamp store. Inside I meet Sarah, a District Scout for the company. Her outfit is definitely standout, so it must be humility that causes her to think she appears "disheveled" today. I can only imagine how she looks when she feels put together.

Maybe it is her experience in the industry—or just her personal outlook—but Sarah's fashion acumen is impressive:

"I've always believed that fashion and style are two completely different things," she says. "Fashion is based on trends, marketing, and branding. It is heavily influenced by runway shows and what designers claim to be in season. Fashion can be emulated, whereas style is inherent, always aesthetically pleasing, effortless, and timeless. Style not only consists of the innate ability to match complimentary color palettes, textures, and patterns, but the way one carries themself as well. Clothes become a prop in the idea that your life is a film and you dress according to the role you feel like playing that day. If you were to take a photo of a fashionable person and present it to someone decades later it would appear outdated and at times laughable, whereas a photo of a person possessing good style would be appreciated, inspiring, and relevant."

At this point I cannot wait for the next thing she is going to say.

Sarah continues, "There are three categories of men: one category are those that only wear clothes for function and conventional reasons, the second would be self-proclaimed fashionistas that dress according to trends and to impress others (most often women), the third consists of men with style. These men have discovered their niche, know what they do and don't like, and dress for themselves in order to heighten their experiences in life and match their mood. Needless to say, I find myself drawn towards men of the latter category. There are no specific garments that are a turnoff on men of the third category, because they are able to select pieces they actually like and incorporate them into their own personal style. My only turnoff are men that are mindlessly following trends or simply wear clothes because they have to, and yes it's apparent."

It is evident she has an endless wealth of insights on the matter. Perhaps we will have Sarah back as a guest contributor.

I'm about to junk these trousers. The fabric is tarnished. The bottoms are frayed. Then it strikes me that I'm short on, well, shorts for Spring. And if you're like me, you prefer a narrower fit on your knee breeches. In that regard trousers make better shorts than the store bought variety, which tend to flare.

There are only 2 key components to this process: sharp scissors and careful measurements. If you favor a folded hem, add 6 centimeters to the length. These were folded up twice after being sheared. If you prefer a frayed look at the bottom, put them through the laundry once or twice.

A wedding reception is livening up at San Diego's best destination for Asian-fusion cuisine, Kafe Yen. Maneuvering around the guests with his camera is Zhou Xiaonan, a natty French fashion photographer. In a year when I thought bow ties were passé, Zhou puts a fresh twist on the trend with a mini double bow. The short collar makes for a perfect combination, not to mention the matching red stitching on his shirt buttons.

I may have shown haste in dismissing cold weather and sporting a tank top in a recent post. A chill descended upon San Diego to remind me that Summer—though close at hand—still requires patience before finally arriving. With brisk mornings, mild afternoons and nippy nights, it's smarter to wear layers of midweight fabrics. The blazer (below) is cotton, rather than wool. The cap is lightweight, as beanies go. Combined with poly/cotton blend slacks, I feel prepared for teeter-totter temperatures. The boots give the look a touch more ruggedness but are a matter of taste.

Tucked around the corner of La Jolla's commercial district—quietly overlooking the Pacific Ocean—is San Diego's Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum's upscale auditorium is an unlikely setting for an indie rock concert, but that's exactly what's on for tonight. Inside I meet concert goers Phil and Yuko, whose attire strikes me as more interesting than the rest—smart, casual and eclectic. It is the texture of Phil's Argentine, raw material jacket that impresses me most, a detail that regrettably does not translate in this photograph. What does still come across is how their outfits complement each other.

Thanks to fellow fashion blogger Meghan, I clink drinks with Black Mamba—the opening act—in the green room. In the category of debaucherous backstage situations, the goings on are fairly conservative... but no less enjoyable.

Is the tank top a valid clothing item?

I have simply never been a tank top kind of guy, always categorizing them somewhere in between underwear and real clothing. That's why adding tanks to my 2010 wardrobe—like this one by Kontorsion—feels like sort of a big deal. It's one indicator that I've weakened my resistance to becoming an authentic citizen of Southern California.

For the time being, I still advise against flip flops. A sensible man should not wear them past the beach or the shower at his local gym. What I do suggest is occasionally layering tank tops with sweaters and cardigans, to make it part of a more substantial ensemble.

Like most creative types, I'm a mild enthusiast of Lomography's affordable retro cameras. This time they've really outdone themselves. Lomo just released the Holga 120 3D Stereo Camera, which produces images viewable in 3D. I'm not sure how many people have 3D glasses, but this might be a fun idea for future blog posts—on my blog or yours.
